George Dubose: Inside real life

As part of the first exhibition in Moscow, the legendary music photographer George DuBose will show portraits of rappers Afrika Bambaataa, Run-D.M.C., Mobb Deep, Rammellzee, Big Daddy Kane, The Notorious B.I.G. and others. The exhibition “Underground Hip-Hop” will open on April 20 with the support of IQOS and MSK Eastsige Gallery in ARTBasement on the -1 floor of the Tsvetnoy Department Store.

Q: What is the difference between today's music and the one that was before? Why hip-hop and music in principle have ceased to be a protest?
A: There is hip-hop, protesting against social injustice, perhaps, today's youth is focused on something else, for example, video games, social networks. Who wants to write songs about the North Korean missile program or the war in Ukraine?

Hannah Perry – A Smashed Window and an Empty Room

A Smashed Window and an Empty Room deals with the impact of trauma on mental and emotional health as well as conditions and consequences of human interactions. With the large-format, pulsating sculpture Rage Fluids and the 360° film GUSH (both 2018), Perry reflects on coming to terms with grief, pain and loss. A newly produced hydraulic sculpture evokes moments of tenderness, intimacy and, violence through a mechanized dance with itself. Hannah Perry’s visual language utilizes coded and gendered industrial materials which reflect on the landscape and demographics that shaped her upbringing in the North of England.

Mitsuko Castle: DAIKU concert by ADAM NOIDLT Missiles

MITSUKO – ADAM NOIDLT MISSELES

Mitsuko Castle: ADAM NOIDLT Missiles improvisation concert of Beethoven's 9th sympfony

DAIKU - 100 years premiere of Beethoven's 9th Symphony in Japan

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony at Bando Prisoner Camp in Japan by German soldiers, an improvisation concert by the German avant-garde group ADAM NOIDLT MISSILES with Michael "Mike" Jansen (Peter Padlt) and Andreas Brüning will be held in Museum Mitsuko, Teterow, Mecklenburg-BVorpommern, Germany.  The ensemble ADAM NOIDLT MISSILES has already appeared at documenta 8 and 11 and in many European museums (among them most recently Ludwig Forum, Lehmbruck Museum).

The concert, titled "Daiku - the joy of liberty", was included in the official events of the Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and is absolutely unique in its kind.

Mitsuko Castle is a museum and place of Japanese culture and contemporary art. Behind the castle and next to the building is the "Japanese grove" (nihon no mori = holy grove of Japan). In it, the vegetation of Mecklenburg Switzerland merges with Japanese plants.

The concert will take place on 3 October 2018, from 10:00.

Kassel: Heinz-Günter MEBUSCH exhibition at DOCUMENTA Archive

Kassel: DOCUMENTA Archive shows artist portraits by Heinz-Günter MEBUSCH

Once again, the documenta archive shows a treasure from its collection: The collection of photographs by Heinz-Günter Mebusch contains more than 200 artist portraits. In the exhibition 39 portraits of artists with a direct relation to the World Art Exhibition are shown. Mebusch dedicated his most extensive series of works to portraying outstanding artists of his time. It was created in the course of 20 years between 1979 and 1999 and was first shown at the Venice Biennale. Instead of a signature of the photographer, the prime portrait drafts bear the signature of the respective artist.

You can see the exhibition at the documenta archive until 3 August. There will be a public tour on July 30 at 5pm.

Hamburg: TRIENNIAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY 2018

KUNSTVEREIN HAMBURG
TRIENNIAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY: BREAKING POINT
CALLA HENKEL / MAX PITEGOFF: SHIFT

Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff (* 1988 in Minneapolis, * 1987 in Buffalo, live and work in Berlin) show photo portraits of actors, artists, writers, musicians and performers in a context that deliberately allows changes to the compositions. Her photographic practice draws on performance, theater and the production of social spaces, such as in the New Theater or in the Green Salon of the Volksbühne Berlin.
The detachment of place and purpose of the persons depicted produces a kind of cast list of a self-administered sitcom of former lovers, friends and people from long-forgotten jobs and foggy weekends. The artists lead us to the point, that we have no idea who (or what) will ultimately collect our images for us, e.g. processed and grouped in the new media of Facebook & Co. In the tradition of conceptual artist Heinz-Günter Mebusch, the artists draw attention to the double nature of the portrait.

Kunstverein Hamburg, June 8 – September 9, 2018

Late Night Quantification
On July 7, 2018, the Kunstverein Hamburg will be hosting the performance of the new album Messages by and with Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten) starting at 11:00 pm under the motto Late Night Quantification – Music, Drinks and Art at Night. The art exhibition is open as well until 3:00 this night.

Michael Jansen: OptiMystic Vitamins

Art can heal

The visual artist and composer Michael (Mike) Jansen has been working for a couple of years on work cycle simular to psychedelic images. These images are created in complex analogue and digital processes on canvas, paper and hard materials. Jansen, who has been dealing with medical questions practically and philosophically for decades, manages to fascinate the viewers with his creations and to introduce them in a hedonistic way into an effective healing process. The 1951 born artist, with visiting professorships at the University of the Arts in Bremen and the Center European d'Art Contemporain, Vallauris, Nice, became first known through his cooperation with Joseph Beuys (Art Museum Vaduz Lichtenstein) and John Cage.

NICOLE WERMERS: WOMEN BETWEEN BUILDINGS

With Women Between Buildings, the Kunstverein in Hamburg will be showing the most comprehensive solo exhibition of Nicole Wermers in Germany until May 6, 2018.

The artist works in sculptural series  and creates object worlds, which are taken from the profane everyday design. Functional elements become  ornament of a sociopolitical and historical engagement within the immediate environment  on the basis of the formal idiom of modernity as well as of the surrounding urban space.
The exhibition features works from the past 10 years, including Untitled Chairs from the 2015 Turner Prize nominated Infrastructure Exhibition, as well as two new sculptures created specifically for this exhibition. The artist appropriates herself semi-public places with an upside-down camera which gives the impression that she is walking on the blanket. Hotels, corporate lobbies and the CCH Hamburg are thus becoming enigmatic, interchangeable endless architectures. Women Between Buildings, this title is a reminiscent of the standard work on urban planning Life between Buildings by the Danish author Jan Gehl from the 1970s, in which he has written about responsibility in urban planning.
Nicole Wermers (* 1971 in Emsdetten, lives and works in London) studied with Sigmar Polke and Claus Böhmler at the College of Fine Arts in Hamburg and at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. In addition to numerous other awards she was nominated in 2015 for the Turner Prize.

ART THESSALONIKI 2017: Mediator of German and European art

In Thessaloniki, capital of Northern Greece, the international art fair will be realised for the second time.
Last year, works by the conceptual artist and photographer Heinz-Günter Mebusch were shown in cooperation with East-German Art project OSTRALE. In 2017 an icon of the Fluxus-movement: Wolf Vostell will be honoured with a museum show. His art has long been appreciated in Greece since its beginning.
Art Thessaloniki has started not only as a global art market place, but also as a mediator between north-south differences and especially between Europe and the oriental cultures.
